Throwdown - Hellbent (On War)

Throwdown really blew me away with their newest installment. I was not expecting a metal album whatsoever. I was expecting their typical style and sound of hardcore meets punk. I was wrong. This album is one of the best metal album's of 2007! Who the hell would've known it would come from a band that is usually not accustomed to metal riffing, drumming and singing! It totally blew me away. Anyhow, the song that I can really relate to was my pick for this month. It blends rhythmic, tribal drumming with straight on guitar riffing, Phil anselmo-ish vocals that gutter and get the point across and low bottom end with a perfect chorus that screams, "Blood for Blood." It is fucking awesome!

Just Jinger - Steady

Funny, I thought I was listening to Brandon Boyd do a 'Morning View'- type song when the song got around to the hook. Don't get me wrong, this isn't one of those Panic!-at-the-Disco-is-interchangeable-with- Fall-Out-Boy things because Just Jinger, out of South Africa mind you, definitely has a sound of its own. Sure vocalist Art Matthews crooned a couple of notes highly reminiscent of the Incubus frontman (a reason I listened to them a second time), but that initial familiarity belies the original quality by this good, really good (and apparently hard-working) band. 'Steady' is an easy Sunday drive along the oceanside with a slow acoustic intro then revs up to coast with a comfortable and unobtrusive melody throughout the rest of the song. The tonality and the lyrics beautifully complement a thought and feel of relaxed optimism and youthful optimism. Definitely my next album purchase.
