Jeremy Fisher @ The House Of Blues,Hollywood Ca.
By: Gian Erguiza - July, 2008
“Hello my name is Jeremy Fisher, What’s your name?” asked the Canadian crooner to a packed venue at the House of Blues in Hollywood. Armed with his beautiful acoustic guitar and harmonica, Jeremy Fisher was making his presence known. Indeed, the young, hip and cool crowd that had gathered in front of Jeremy, had their eyes planted on the man.
Jeremy Fisher, backed by his band sounded extremely good. Starting the set off strong with songs from his latest, ”Goodbye Blue Monday,” Jeremy immediately had everyone at the palms of his hands. He even joked on the microphone that ‘Canadians are almost just like Americans but Americans get more noticed because they don’t have an accent.’ After that bit of a joke, Jeremy and the band quickly went into one of the best songs on his latest release, “American Girls,” which was gladly accepted and cheered on by, who else, the American Girls in the crowd.
The first time I heard Jeremy’s album a few months back, I knew he was talented. From the song structures, melodies, and heartfelt lyrics, he drew me into the music without trying. I haven’t heard an honest talent like Jeremy Fisher in a while so it was music to my ears. The music reminded me of great songs from the 70’s and present time with a touch of folk and pop to round it out.
“Sula,” named after a book he had read, got one of the best responses from the crowd. Another song that showcased Jeremy’s talent and the bands talent was “Lay Down.” Before I move on, I’d like to say that his band, bass player and drummer, were a complete delight. They stuck to their parts while Jeremy sang away and boy did they do a good job on their instruments and on backing vocals. On “Lay Down,” Jeremy decided it was time for the crowd to help out and sing along to the words so he presented the words, ‘This is freedom’ to which the crowd loved and sang along on command.
The biggest song highlight of the night would have to be Jeremy Fisher’s cover of a Genesis song, Peter Gabriel era. I am ashamed to tell you that I don’t know the song, I have heard it before, but being not a big fan of Genesis, I regret to inform you that I don’t know the title of the song. Some of the people on the crowd did though and they loved every single minute of it. All I know is that it had the lyrics ‘Boom boom boom’ which the crowd knew very well.
In closing, Jeremy Fisher thanked the crowd and reminded everyone to pick up his CD which according to him, ‘Is somewhere around in this building.’ The last song for the evening, “Remind me,” sounded absolutely fantastic. Jeremy even mentioned that the song is very ‘high school’ and that it’s one of his favorites off his album. Before sending us off to intermission, he treated us to a little solo jam with the band that made their skills shine out some more. After the show I decided to skip on O.A.R., Jeremy had made my night.
