5 MMA Moves Sure to Make Your Opponent Cry Like a Little Baby

By: Gian Erguiza - June, 2008

MMA has come a long way. I have been a fan of this extreme sport ever since it started and I am extremely happy that it’s getting the recognition it deserves, after all of these years. I have seen Royce Gracie submit and force his opponents to “tap out” back in the days, seen Chuck Liddell pound every fighter to the ground, except lately, and just most recently, seen Randy Cotoure, single handedly destroy Tim Silva with one punch. MMA is an extension of boxing but what seperates the two worlds is, the ground game.

Back in the days of Royce Gracie, nobody knew what ground game was and fighters would step in the ring and get submitted out of nowhere, no matter how big, strong or good of a striker they were. You see, the first time I seen Royce use his submission skills on other fighters, I thought it was a cheap way to win. Little did I know how hard it was to execute submission moves and establish ground game.

Now in 2008, submission moves are a must to be learned in order to stay alive in the cage. If you don’t have any ground game and go against someone who does, you will most likely end up on the floor, tapping out. Don’t get me wrong, striking skills and wrestling skills are still primary weapons but having good submission moves makes a fighter that much more well rounded and dangerous. So with no further delay, here are the Top 5 MMA submission moves to make your opponent cry like a little baby.

Guillotine Choke Hold

This move is a favorite amongst experienced jiu-jitsu fighters. The guillotine usually happens when an opponent tries to take down another opponent with their head down, into the armpit, giving the opponent on the defense, the chance to choke their opponent with the guillotine.

Once the opponent’s head is tucked in the armpit, the opponent on the defense then wraps their arm around their chin. Without going around the opponents arm, they then hold onto the hand of the first arm with the second. Once the position is applied, they lift up the opponents head, cutting off the air and circulation. This move can either be applied standing up or on the guard position on the ground. You can check out numerous fights with endings in guillotine choke hold.

Arm Bar

Time and time again, the arm bar is the most applied submission move out of all the submission moves. The arm bar is designed to trap one arm with one hand while the other hand is pushing on the neck area or the shoulder. When the guard opens up, the next step is to crunch or pivot, opposite of the trapped arm. Once that’s established, climb the leg up the back of the opponent and make a loop around the opponents neck with the other leg. The last move would be to grasp the trapped arm with both hands, push up the hips and pull on the arm with both legs pressing out. Ouch.

Knee Bar

The knee bar is performed when an opponent’s guard is broken. The performer then steps over the guard and grabs a leg. The performer then uses leverage, falls back with leg in both hands and secures the toes in. They can also better secure the move by wrapping both legs around the trapped leg, adding more leverage.

Rear Naked Choke

This move is pulled off from the back. The performer must then curl his arm around their neck with their forearm against each other and the bicep against the neck. The hand of the choking arm then tucks in closer and holds onto the bicep of the other arm. The performer then tucks it in closer by tucking in their head, expands the chest area and proceeds to squeeze.

Kimura

This move is applied from the guard. With the performer gripping on the hand of the opponent, it opens up their guard. The performer, can then push off the opponent’s hips and proceed to sit up. The performer’s free hand can then grab through the opponent’s arm and grab their wrist. The final move is to keep the arm away from the opponent’s body, then attempt to touch the back of the trapped hand to the opponent’s head.

Although these moves can be done by you, we don’t expect you to. These moves are done by professionals and doing these moves to someone can cause serious bodily damage. Please do not attempt to pull of any of these submission moves on anyone or anybody including friends, family and others if you are not a professional. People will get hurt.
