Another Black Day
Another Black Day? Not for these guys. Nothing but sunshiny days on the horizon for these Florida rockers from here on out. Meet Another Black Day.
By: Gian Erguiza - - May 27th, 2008 - 1:18 pm PST

Having recently sign with Beiler Bros. and releasing their debut shortly, Another Black Day is on the attack and they're hungry. These rockers are aiming for none other than the top. With successful spins from different rock/metal stations all over the U.S., Another Black Day is set to make their mark in the world of rock and metal. Jose Robles a.k.a. Das Haas took some time out to answer some of our burning questions, all about A.B.D.
Hey guys! Can you guys please do me a favor and give our readers a quick history lesson about the band and your humble beginnings?
It all started when Angel and I stared jamming with Angel’s brother Frank and our friend James. Due to personal reasons, James left and I put out an ad for a new guitarist and a few days later Matt called me. Shortly after that, Frank left and we eventually picked up Ernesto. That’s pretty much it in a nutshell, but there are many more chapters to be written.
So your debut album from Bieler Bros. is coming out on May 20th. How excited are you guys to unveil your new record and what are you guys’ expectations for the new record?
We are very stoked to have our work released world wide with the backing of the Bieler Bros. We are also very confident that our album will be well received by fans abroad. We put our heart and soul into this album and it shows; it’s our baby. Regardless of what happens we are still living the dream so we appreciate every aspect of it.
Judging from the sound of your first single "Wicked Soul", the production for this album was most likely handled with care. What went into making this album as far as sound, production and songwriting?
The songs have been sifted for a few years now so we are proud to say it’s our best offering. We love each and every song, no fillers. Our producer/engineer Matt LaPlant spent countless hours making sure that the production reflects the passion and effort that went into the songs. We are very happy with the production and the songwriting. It is true and from the heart so you can’t really ask for more as a musician.
What is the song process like for you guys and where do you guys derive inspiration from when writing music?
Matt comes up with the foundation and concept we then build on that as a band giving it the "ABD sound." It can start with catchy lyrics or a cool riff. For every one song that we keep we have two or three that we shelf because they don’t have "it." We don’t sit down and try to write hits, we just do what we like and run with that.
So far, or at least for today, what is the band’s favorite song off the record and which one is the band’s favorite, livewise?
We always struggle with this question because it’s like asking a parent to pick their favorite child. We all have different influences and tastes so we tend to like different songs off the album. Personally, I like Take Back because I love playing that song live, when Angel and I are in the pocket with that song it grooves so well. I also like playing the title track because the bass lines enable me to be more entertaining, and that’s what its all about. Ernesto favors Crawling because it’s intricate and has several cool vibes.
The music industry is going through some drastic changes everyday and more and more musicians are continuously coming up with new ways to release their album and find support. In you guys’ opinion, what does a band have to do these days to stay afloat in this ever-changing music industry?
The internet, as detrimental as it has been in the last few years, has also helped countless musicians spread their music around the world with a few clicks of the keyboard. In my opinion, to have longevity in this business you have to write the songs that connect to the masses, its music 101, there is nothing that can stop a good song from connecting if you have the right team backing you.
"For every one song that we keep we have two or three that we shelf because they don’t have "it." We don’t sit down and try to write hits, we just do what we like and run with that."
We also believe that without the fans none of this would be possible, so we make it a priority to interact with the fans after each show.
There are a number of rock/metal bands right now making waves in the musical landscape, creating different opportunities and forging the way back to the top for rock music. Where do you guys fit into the equation and what are you guys’ thoughts on the current rock/metal scene?
Hmm, we have been pretty pleased as of the current state of rock music. If you would have asked me this question a few years ago I would have gone into a full rant lol. We think we are in the perfect position, many people have told us that our music is “refreshing”, we know that we are not re-inventing the wheel but we do bring something different that the masses have been waiting for.
Do you guys ever pay attention to the charts or what’s happening on the radio?
We pay way too much attention to it lol. We check the charts several times a day. It is more about being excited that we are up there with bands that influence us. It’s all a dream come true to us so we are just living in the moment and we appreciate every second of it.
How do you guys interact with your fans and how much do you guys owe to your fans at this moment in time?
We absolutely love gaining and meeting new fans every night. We are in a position where every fan counts, so as I mentioned earlier we all know that after each set we go mingle with fans, and make new friends.
Alright let’s get this one out of the way. Who is the myspace whore that gets to answer all of the messages, nasty or not, and how do you guys handle the nasty messages if any?
Well, we are all MySpace whores so it all depends on who logs in first. Fortunately, there have not been many nasty messages so were thankful for that lol. If I come across a nasty message I tend to ignore it, I think that is the norm for us. Internet arguments are lame and a waste of time lol.
Now, who’s the party animal in this band and what should I have at hand or bring with me when I meet you guys?
We are all pretty chill, we treat this as our job so with that rational we try to be as professional as possible. Our current tour schedule is pretty rigorous so we cannot afford to have an “off” day. If I had to pick a “party animal” it would be Ernesto, he is young and likes to have a good time, nothing crazy, just a good time.
Let’s take a left turn here. The politics of today and the economy are way whacked out of sync. You’ve got President Bush runnin’ the free world with complete disregard, Britney Spears digging herself an early grave, and the economy going to shit with gas prices rising well above standard and the economic turmoil showing no end in sight. What do you guys propose, let me say this, about making this world ‘A better place?’
Hmmm…interesting. I do not know if this world will ever be the utopia it was designed to be! We all live our lives one day at a time and never take anything for granted. Even the small things!!!!
What interests Another Black Day and how do you guys spend your time when not rocking the stage or writing songs?
We are currently on tour so when we are not playing or writing we are crammed in a van or hotel room. I am an internet junkie so I am always online, the same goes for Angel. Matt and Ernesto smoke cigarettes as a hobby lol.
What are some of the bands pet peeves while out on the road?
Farts and endless driving! But the moment we hit the stage its fucking show time!!!!! So the foul odors of six dudes is kind of worth it!
Any additional comments or shout-outs?
We want to thank all of the people who support this band! Without them. none of this would be happening!
Thanks Jose!
