LIVE REVIEW
Horrorpops, Pink Spiders @ House of Blues, Sunsetrip, Los Angeles, CA.
By: Gian Erguiza - April, 2008
Curtains open, lights starts flashing, Patricia lets out a huge "Welcome!"
Patricia sets the record straight after the second song and says, "We are here to have a good time right? Let me here you guys say 'Hell Yeah!' The crowd obviously responded with an overwhelming 'Hell Yeah!' Patricia then goes on to say that they saved Los Angeles as the last stop of their tour to make it special. That they did and happy we were.
Their latest release,"Kiss Kiss Kill Kill," is an album full of fun and great songs, some you want to ride to, some you want to fall in love to and some you'd definitely want to kill to. The track, "Thelma and Louise," which they played as the second song, is an instant classic Horrorpops track. Other tracks on the album follow suite as classic Horrorpops and fans and new fans will not be dissapointed. It is one damned good album.
As the night progressed, Patricia, looking quite stunning in a gold full dress and sporting long black wavy hair, kept the crowd entranced by interacting through singing and having us help with some of the words and choruses which made it more fun. At one point, she made it clear how much they love Los Angeles and how much they loved playing for their beloved Los Angeles fans which was quite humbling. Patricia even made it a point to scream on the mic at security for trying to kick out two brawlers which she bellowed, "Hey, do not kick them out of the venue! Nobody gets kicked out of a Horropops show! Just because two meat heads can't settle their differences, doesn't mean they should be kicked out of the show!" Nice, she actually cared to which most bands would've just ignored the fact.
Nekroman and Hendrik, what can I say, they held the beat tight. Nekroman through a number of guitar changes electrified the crowd with his psychobilly rock n roll riffs and Hendrik pummeled in the background with much authority. Both men were stand outs and did a great job holding it down.
Of course, I cannot forget to mention how much of a good job the can-can girls did in dancing their ass away, keeping the crowd in full attention. They were also looking cute with their dressess and man did they move it.
Some of the songs that owned the night were "Drama Queen," "Baby Lou Tattoo," "Hell Yeah," "Everything's Everything," and "Headed for the Disco." Horrorpops also put out a slew of other songs that rocked the house.
Probably the coolest song of the night would be "Cool Flat Top." The band went into a drunken fun jam session with Nekroman taking over Patricia's bass and doing a mean solo with Hendrik on the back up. Hendrik also takes a stab at a drum solo but stops short to stand up and scream, "I hate drum solos!" The two jam out some more until joined by an apparent friend to jam out some more. Patricia then comes back to join them in the fold and finish it out.
Horrorpops were an absolute treat. They were nothing but good times and boy did they sound better than the records. I was way surprised at how strong Patricia's voice and stage presence was, she is a true rock and roller! Same goes for Nekroman and Hendrik. We had a blast!
The Pink Spiders were co-headliners. Even though they sounded good, the crowd didn't seem to care? I thought they sounded great except for maybe the singers whiny ass voice but hey that's his talent and I can't knock him for that. He did play some excellent guitar though and the band was tight with their songs. I don't know, maybe it was the singers tight pink tiger stripped pants that turned the crowd off or maybe his voice period? Don't know but they were nto half as bad as the crowd percieved them to be. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't pay to see them but I didn't mind them.
