Biomechanical

Musically Brutal, Classically Deranged.
By: Gian Erguiza - - February 26th, 2008 - 3:15 pm PST

Like a brutal metal, sonic, sci-fi, classical sounding monster from the deep, Biomechanical unleashes the fury and delivers the pain. With their newest offering, "Cannibalised," John K and Co. show us why they're different from the rest and why Biomechanical is a band to be wreckoned with. Charismatic, dual-voiced frontman, John K, takes a minute to talk about everything Biomechanical.

Hey John! Can you do me a big favor and please enlighten our readers to the bands humble beginnings and how Biomechanical started?

Sure thing, Biomechanical started as an idea I had back in 1999. I felt metal was on the rise and I always wanted to write a metal album and release it. I had some bands before but never really went all the way so I wanted to take ‘the Metal’ out of my system. So I sat down and wrote Eight Moons. It took about 3 months to write it and another 3 months to record it with Guitarist Steve Forward. After a few months of the completion of the album Producer Steve Brown thought that was a good work so I had talks with him and he decided to manage us for a while.

I realized it would be best to put a band together. So I got across the first line up which lasted until very recently. I am now working with the very talented Gus Drax, Jonno Lodge, Chris Hayden and Adrian Lambert.

So you guys just released “Cannibalised,” and it’s definitely a face melter and I love it! How excited are you guys to finally have your work out there and have people banging their heads to it?

It’s incredible man, there has been so much hard work gone into this. The reaction has been unreal. And it gets more intense as time goes by. It’s the best payback having people sending you cool messages on MySpace or emails. Also the reviews have been mental.

In my opinion, your latest release, simply put, is ‘Technically Brutal!’ How much work went into the album and what was the recording process like for this album?

As I said it was very hard work. It took 14 months from the day I started writing it to the day it was mixed and mastered. But even after that I had to produce the orchestral music from the songs as bonus tracks. The recording process with me as a producer is very meticulous. I don’t like leaving anything to chance and every element should be recorded as best as possible. So yeah man, it was tough. Add to that, that I had to produce the drums as drummer Matt C didn’t record on this album and you can imagine the volume of work. But it was worth it though. Thankfully with the help of producer Chris Tsangarides we managed to finish the album and create a disc that I am very proud of

Great work man, “Cannibalised” is one hell of a shred fest. Shredding guitars, drums and bass paired with this extremely unique voice. How was the songwriting process like for this album and what do you guys hope to accomplish with this record?

I wrote this album by myself and this has been the case with the other Biomechanical albums. I felt ’Fuck it’ no point compromising and trying to be ’current’. Create ‘current’ and don’t follow the trends. It’s all from the heart. Uncompromising metal with no boundaries!

Alright guys let me ask you, what prompted the move to sign with Earache Records? Good move by the way!

Sheer Madness!!!! Ha Ha, They have been absolutely fantastic.

We were signed to Revolver records (small UK label) and after Eight Moons got really good reviews we were approached by Lee Barrett who was working as an

A&R for a sub label called Elitist Records. We had a few meetings and the timing was great as most of the recordings for The Empires of the Worlds were done.

We signed on September 3rd 2004.

Are you guys planning to shoot any videos anytime soon? There are a few tracks on the new album that I’d love to see with video! Bet your fans would love it as well.

Will see how things go man. I think Fallen in Fear would be a good song to shoot.

How much attention do you guys pay to the radio and the charts?

I can’t talk on behalf of the other guys but I only hear what’s around. So I can’t really say that I actively look around to see what’s out every week type of thing.

Every band is cursed with bad nights. What do you guys consider to be a bad night and how do you guys deal with a bad night?

Oh man. Bad night is when you can’t hear fuck all and you play like shit as a result. It’s a common thing though.

Metalcamp 08 sounds like it’s going to be some good times! How excited are you guys to be part of this awesome metalfest?

Ah , it rules man. It will be a real blast. We have also just been confirmed for the Portuguese CAOS EMERGENTE festival! It’s great stuff. Hopefully will get more gigs like these.

Let’s switch gears. Gene Simmons of KISS recently blamed the Internet for ‘Killing Music.’ Do you agree with Gene and how do you guys feel about the whole digital downloading revolution? Yay or Nay?

For sure. Millions of users downloading music for free? It can’t be a good thing for the industry. I understand that Metal is about the community and the good times and about playing music and not about the money but thing is. A lot of small labels who support some awesome bands will close. Real soon. And then there won’t be any releases. It’s a chain reaction. The bands need the record labels to get their shit out and the record labels need the bands to pay their staff. So yeah it kills the industry.

On the other hand there are a lot of descent people out there who after downloading a CD go and buy it so it’s not straight forward.

Now what type of musings does Biomechanical enjoy outside of music life? In other words, how do you guys spend your days and what do you guys do to pass the time when not making nor playing music?

I personally love and listen to film scores. John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Elliot Goldenthal etc. The other dudes love Maiden , Dream Theater as far as I know.

What else can we expect from you guys for the rest of 2008?

Playing live, gigs, gigs, and mo gigs!
