The Raveonettes

The Raveonettes call for more Lust Lust Lust!
By: Gian Erguiza - - January 28th, 2008 - 11:27 am PST

A noisy rendezvous, a melodic trip, a songwriting spectacle. The Raveonettes are a unique band that blends beautiful music with beautiful melodies and lyrics to create wonderful songs. We took some time out to chat with Sune about their latest and happenings in Raveonettes' world.

Hey Sune, can you guys please give our readers a quick history lesson on the band?

The raveonettes came together in 2001 in copenhagen. I had just come back from the states where I had written our 1st ep "whip it on" and I hooked up with sharin and asked her to start a band with me. I knew sharin from before. From there on it went really fast and we got signed to columbia records in 2002 and released "whip it on" in 2002, "chain gang of love" in 2003 and "pretty in black" in 2005. .

“Lust, Lust, Lust,” is set to be released in the U.S. on February 19th. What can we expect from the soon to be released album and how much work went into the album as far as songwriting, production and sound?

Hopefully the album will be a huge success and people will finally realize what a unique band we truly are. I take the songwriting very seriously and a considerable amount of time went into this album. I worked on finding the right vibe and sound for the album for a long time but once I found it the songs were very easy to write. Oi recorded everything in my pad in nyc and we mixed it in nyc with a young genius called chris young.

One of the first tracks I heard from “Lust, Lust, Lust,” is “Aly, Walk with Me,” and it is just completely awesome! Should we be expecting a video from this song anytime soon and is this you guys’ favorite track of the new record?

Thanks! We shot a video for it in london a few months ago and it's gonna be cool. I have so many favorite tracks on this album and aly is definitely one of them.

The video for “Dead Sound” is marvelous and the Black Cab Session performance of that song is just graciously mind-bending. Who came up with the concept for the video and how did you guys choose which song was going to be made into a video, especially to be performed in the back of a London taxi cab for Black Cab Sessions?

We found a great director and asked him to make a video based on what feelings and images he got from listening to dead sound. We gave him complete creative freedom. Dead sound is the first single released in the uk off the new album which is why we did a video for it and played it for the black cab session.

Now you guy have a pretty extensive North American Tour lined up this year. Do you guys have any expectations and what do guys hope to accomplish by touring for the new record?

We hope to make such a huge impression on people that when we come back we'll play bigger venues. We wanna move ahead and feel we're progressing and get people really excited about the fact that the raves are coming to their town.

What prompted you guys to sign with Vice Records and how’s the relationship coming along?

We were talking to various labels at the time but when vice came in the picture it just sort of felt right and we wanted it to happen very badly. We met and that was it. Great enthusiasm and mutual respect.

So what does The Raveonettes consider to be good times aside from being onstage of writing songs?

I can only speak from a personal perspective. I like walking around nyc and be inspired. I like being in bed watching movies or reading. I like taking pictures and going to bookshops...

Being outstanding musicians that you guys are, what are you guys currently listening to and do you guys have any recommends for our readers?

I've been listening to the sadies a lot, a really great canadian band. Also the black angels and the warlocks.

"I believe that you should pay a monthly fee and be able to download anything you want all the time or maybe you shouldn't even pay for it, can't really figure it out...I rarely pay for music myself."

The shangri-las, gene vincent, the cramps, jody reynolds, vintage xmas music like nat king cole, dean martin, ella fitzgerald and brenda lee.

Help me out with this one Sune. What is the biggest misconception about The Raveonettes?

That we're from sweden.

Radiohead has currently upped the bar in music by letting their fans price their album according to how much they think it’s worth. What do you guys think about that idea?

It's ok I guess but on the other hand people couldn't just buy the songs they liked. They actually had to buy the entire album which sucks. At least that's what I heard, I never really looked into it.

For those unfortunate people that have yet to catch a live show by you guys, please enlighten them on what they can expect from your live show.

It's an intense experience in sound and emotions. It's rowdy, it's noisy, it's quiet, it's introvert, it's the tension we like and the idea of gradually converting people into surrendering themselves to the music. We're 3 people on stage with a massive sound.

Sex, Drugs, or Rock N’ Roll? Pick one.

Sex.

The digital world is growing stronger and bigger by the minute. Being musicians in a digital world, what are you guys’ thoughts on the current war between digital downloading and physical purchase?

I stopped buying cd's a long time ago. I download all my music and I love it. I still buy vinyl though cause that's fun to have...I believe that you should pay a monthly fee and be able to download anything you want all the time or maybe you shouldn't even pay for it, can't really figure it out...I rarely pay for music myself.

Thanks Sune!
